OPPOSITION AGAINST EARLY PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

Politics | October 27, 2001, Saturday // 00:00

The Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) will try to act as an alternative to the incumbents and will not press for early parliamentary elections, UDF leaders said after their working meeting in Italy, which was attended by representatives of the European People’s Party and the Christian Democratic Party. Two dissenting opinions on this issue have been expressed during the discussions. Stefan Sofianski, Sofia City Mayor, called for UDF to disband and seek new forms of organization. Evgeni Bakurdzhiev, UDF-Sofia leader, delivered an emotional speech on the future of the party. The coalition agreement, its revision, the coalition’s role on the political scene, and the solutions it can offer in its capacity of opposition were discussed at the seminar. “The government must remain stable until 2002 when Bulgaria is expected to be invited to join NATO,” Ekaterina Mihailova, UDF leader, said. She confirmed UDF’s determination to win the next parliamentary elections. “After the Italian seminar UDF leaders feel upbeat about the future of the coalition,” she added.
