CIA Chief: Al-Qaeda Still Capable of "Catastrophic Attacks" Al-Qaeda is still capable of “catastrophic attacks” in the US as the network’s regional groupings share an anti-American goal, CIA Chief G. Tenet warned. Photo by CNN

Regional al-Qaeda networks are still capable of "Catastrophic Attacks" on US targets, CIA Director George Tenet, cited by The Washington Post, told the Senate intelligence committee on Tuesday. According to Tenet, the US has achieved considerable success in fighting against Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, turning it into a fragmented collection of regional groupings. Those local networks, however, are still dangerous - they pick their own targets and plan their own attacks, CIA chief said, adding that they all shared a common anti-US goal."Poison attacks" were pointed out as the most immediate threat, as Tenet referred to al-Qaeda's ongoing efforts to produce Anthrax material. Using such an "improvised weapon," terrorists would seek to cause "a large number of casualties in a crowded, enclosed area," the US spymaster warned.
