An Iraqi translator working for the Americans was killed and a US soldier wounded Saturday when gunmen ambushed three civilian cars in Haswa, 30 kilometres (20 miles) southwest of Baghdad, the US military and witnesses said. American civil affairs officers had been travelling in the unmarked Ford Explorer vehicles at the time of the morning attack. The latest unrest came with Iraq still in political limbo after the United Nationsvetoed direct elections before Washington cedes power by June 30 and as US civil administrator Paul Bremer poured more cold water on demands by the Shiite Muslim majority for quick polls.
