Pakistan and India will go to the negotiating table after more than two-and-a-half years in a bid to solve the Kashmir dispute, which has plagued relations since independence from Britain. The nuclear-capable countries have not discussed Kashmir since July 2001, since when they have veered dangerously close to their third war over the region. The Himalayan region is divided between India and Pakistan but claimed in full by both, while a Muslim rebellion in Indian Kashmir has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
