Talks Continue over Divided Cyprus If the tentative Greek and Turkish hand-shake was anything to approach a deal on divided island, caustious optimism is shared at UN headquarters in News York. The plan has to work out before Cyprus joins the EU on May 1. Photo by Hellas.gr.

Cautious optimism at UN headquarters in New York as Cypriot negotiators, Greek and Turkish sit down for a third consecutive day to try to thrash out a deal over the divided Mediterranean island. If the tentative hand-shake was anything to go by then a deal is within reach, however, some envoys are cautioning against too much optimism noting that international efforts to unite the island have failed for the past three decades. The negotiators are working on a reunification plan for the island, before Cyprus joins the European Union on May 1.
