Germany's Schroeder Resigns from Party Post

Germany's Gerhard Schroeder announced that he would resign as head of his ruling Social Democratic party, after a barrage of criticism of his government's economic reforms, but would remain as Chancellor. He told at a press conference that he would ask a special party conference at the end of March to appoint Franz Muentefering, the SPD's parliamentary group leader and one of his closest allies, as his successor.
