Iraq's northern Kurdish region declared an official three-day mourning period, a day after twin suicide bombings in the city of Arbil left 65 dead and around 200 wounded during major Muslim celebrations.Bombers strapped with explosives unleashed carnage on Sunday while hundreds were gathered to celebrate the Muslim holiday at the offices of the Kurdish Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). The death toll rose Monday after medics said that at least 65 people had died as a result of the attacks, as overwhelmed hospitals struggled to cope with the huge number of wounded and officials pleaded for blood donors. Key figures were killed from both the two main Kurdish parties, which controlled the semi-autonomous north during the rule of Saddam Hussein in defiance of the Iraqi leader.
