Democrats running for the US White House united in condemning President George Bush over the war in Iraq and pledged to rebuild overseas alliances damaged by the conflict. Largely putting aside their own rivalries during a televised debate, the seven candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination instead focused their ire on the Bush administration, accusing the president of misleading and even lying to the American people in the runup to the Iraq war. Senator John Kerry, the current front runner in the nomination race, said Bush had sacrificed the trust placed in him as commander-in-chief. Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean said Bush was clearly "not candid" about the reasons for going to war. Retired General Wesley Clark, a former NATO commander in Europe, warned that Bush was "playing politics" with national security, while former Cleveland mayor Dennis Kucinich said the 130,000 US troops in Iraq were "standing there based on lies."
