Evidence has been found that civet cats carry the SARS virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced. A team of inspectors from the Organization found traces of the deadly virus in civet cats cages in a restaurant in the southern Chinese province of Guangzhou. However, it is still not clear how does the virus spread from animals to humans, and whether the infection was spread from civets of other animals. Chinese scientists had already linked SARS with civet cats, which led to the slaughter of 4,000 animals in Guangdong Province. The move prompted mass protests since it had not yet been proved that the civets carry the virus.
