National Campaign on Preserving Two Bulgarian Churches in Turkey Kicked Off

A national campaign on the preservation of two Bulgarian churches in the Turkish town of Edirne will be launched on Wednesday. Emergency renovation works are being carried out at the churches of Saint George and St. St. Constantine and Helene, the only Christian churches in the town. Funds need to be raised for fortifying the buildings' walls.

An initiative committee with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Bulgarian National Radio and some non-profit organizations have organized the campagn. The state can subsidize the reconstruction works only with the authorization of the Cabinet, an expert from the Department of Ecclesiastical Matters commented.

The aim of the fund raising initiative is that both churches are reopened on May 6, the Christian celebration of St. George.

The idea enjoys full support of local Turkish authorities, because both churches are considered a historic and cultural part of the town, which could serve for attracting more tourists to Edirne, the consul general of Bulgaria Georgi Dimov pointed out.
