Simitis Resigned as Party Leader, Elections Mar 7

World | January 7, 2004, Wednesday // 00:00

Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis resigned from presidency of the Socialist Party PASOK, which has ruled the country for the last eight years. He scheduled the parliamentary elections at the date of March 7, 2004, which is quite earlier than the due dates of April 25 or May 2, world information agencies informed. Simitis stated that he would continue to be Prime Minister until elections day, when he will turn over the position to his successor in PASOK leadership. Tomorrow, at a special session, PASOK's Central Committee shall nominate another party leader, most probably the current foreign minister Georgios Papandreou. Simitis is also one of strongest candidatures for the helm of EU Commission President, which has to be handed over by Romano Prodi on Nov 2004.
