India, Pakistan Breakthrough Relations

Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan reached a breakthrough agreement on Tuesday to open talks, probably in February, following an ice-breaking meeting between Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on the sidelines of a regional summit. Diplomats hailed the agreement as a confident step, settling their dispute over Kashmir, which brought the two neighbours to the brink of war two years ago.
