Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi made a surprise New Year visit to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo commemorating the country's war dead. The visit was met with an angry reaction from China and South Korea, which are among nations that suffered from Japan's war-time aggression. China summoned the acting Japanese ambassador to make "solemn representations" and Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the visit could damage political ties, the Xinhua news agency reported. South Korea's foreign ministry said in a statement: "It is really hard to understand that Japan's highest government official continues to pay homage to those war criminals."
