Rumsfeld Attacks Arabic Channels

Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, stepped up his attacks on Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiyah yesterday, saying the Arabic television news channels co-operated with Iraqi insurgents to witness attacks on US troops. He said that he had "seen scraps of information over a sustained period" supporting the claim. His comments are the latest in a series of attacks on the news stations. Media groups say they could jeopardise the future of a free press in Iraq. Last week Rumsfeld criticised the two stations for being openly hostile to the US and said their bias should be countered.
