Second Key Shevardnadze Minister Resigns

Georgia's State Minister Avtandil Dzhorbenadze resigned on Tuesday. He is the second key minister of ousted President Eduard Shevardnadze to quit after Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili made the same move on Monday. News agencies cited Dzhorbenadze, a close Shevardnadze ally, as saying "I am a person who does not change his principles and because of this I have made my decision to resign." In a separate development Georgia's parliament Tuesday decided that presidential elections will he held on Jan 4. Eduard Shevardnadze quitted as Georgian President on Sunday amid mass protests. The move came after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, main opposition leader Mikhail Saakashvili and fellow opposition activist Zurab Zhvania at his residence.
