Thousands of opposition supporters staged a rally in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, calling for President Eduard Shevardnadze to resign. They said the results from last Sunday's general election have been rigged in the government bloc's favour. One of the rally's organisers, Mikhail Saakashvili, has urged authorities not to use force against the demonstrators. Hundreds of troops and riot police are deployed in Tbilisi, amid fears that the stand-off could again turn violent. On Friday, two people were injured in the western town of Zugdidi after a group of up to 50 men opened fire at anti-government rally. Final results have not been declared, but pro-government parties hold the lead in official interim figures.
