US Faces Troops Pressure as Turkey Recoils

Turkey's unwillingness to send troops to Iraq without clear support from US-installed Iraqi leaders could deal a major blow to US efforts to attract other countries' help against an increasingly deadly resistance. Tuesday's statements by Turkey's ambassador to US explaining the decision to stay out made clear that Pentagon officials, lacking any fresh infusion of allied troops, will have to send thousands more US reservists to Iraq early next year. Bush administration officials had hoped a UN Security Council resolution approved last month would persuade reluctant allies to send more forces to help in Iraq. No additional countries have contributed forces since.
