Georgian Government Leads According to Initial Results

First results from parliamentary elections in the former Soviet republic Georgia gave the pro-government bloc the lead, though opinion polls had consistently shown voters, deeply unhappy with their country's rampant poverty and corruption, favouring the opposition. Opponents of Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze explained the discrepancy by saying the government had rigged the vote, and warned that their supporters were ready to march on government offices in protest.
