Rescue workers at a coal mine in southern Russia have found alive 11 of 13 miners trapped deep underground for six days, emergency officials said. The men were found on Wednesday morning after rescuers managed to break through to the pitface where the miners had sought refuge. Eleven were alive, one of them seriously injured, and one miner was confirmed dead. A 13th was still reported as missing at the Zapadnaya coal mine in Novoshakhtinsk, Rostov Province. In a separate incident on Wednesday, a powerful explosion hit a mine in eastern Siberia, killing at least five miners. Initial reports said methane had exploded inside the mine at the town of Partizansk where 64 people were working at a depth of 750 metres.
