CRIMINAL GANG EXTORTS SOFIA BUSINESSMEN

Politics | October 16, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00

The Bulgarian National Service for Fight against Organized crime (SFOC) arrested a group of racketeers in Sofia on October 12. The gangs have been blackmailing Sofia businessmen. Their victims – rich businessmen and clerks – were forced to sign a warrant, declaring that they owed to the criminals huge sums in the range of BGN 5 000 to 25 000. An investigation into a possible link between the extortions and the recent phone tapping scandal is being conducted. Bank employees and a member of the jury are suspected of complicity in the criminal activities.
