UN Security Council voted unanimously to adopt the US-backed Resolution on Iraq that seeks additional troops and money to support the stabilization of the country. Shortly before the vote, it was said Syria -- the only Arab country on the council -- would vote for the initiative instead of opposing it or abstaining, as it had previously signalled. Immediately after the vote was taken, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said that the process has been difficult, however "the outcome is a clear demonstration of the will of all the members of the Security Council to place the interest of the Iraqi people above all other considerations." Earlier Thursday, the three European opponents of the war against Iraq Germany, France and Russia said they would vote in favour of the resolution.
