UN Iraq Vote Delayed

World | October 16, 2003, Thursday // 00:00

The United States has agreed to a Russian request to further delay a vote on a new US-backed resolution setting out a vision for post-war Iraq. Russia's UN ambassador Sergei Lavrov said he would not be able to vote until after discussions on Thursday between the presidents of Russia, France and Germany.

The vote will now be held at 1000 New York time (14:00 GMT) on Thursday. US and British diplomats are keen to get broad backing for their resolution in order to send a message to Iraqis that the international community is behind their blueprint for the country. France, Germany and Russia all opposed the US-led intervention in Iraq.
