"Breast Cancer Can Be Defeated" is the motto that unites members of the International Women's Club in Sofia and twenty more companies and organizations in their intention to raise public and health profession awareness, prevention and cure of the disease as well as vital information and support to those affected by the disease.

The campaign, which was officially launched October 14, is organized for the second successive year and takes place under the patronage of Bulgarian prime minister's wife Margarita Gomez-Acebo with the active participation of the wife of US Ambassador James Pardew, Kathy Pardew, and the wife of the Spanish Ambassador Emma Hernandez. With this series of initiatives Bulgaria joins activities of all the major breast cancer and cancer charities around the world, which traditionally takes place in October, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It is our main aim to show women that breast cancer is treatable if diagnosed at an early stage, is the message that the women from the International Women's Club in Sofia are set to send during the campaign. They expressed their relief that they manage to turn the public eye on their activities, which attract more and more supporters.

A TV spot, featuring five famous Bulgarian women, will be aired for the first time this year to promote the campaign's goals. Maria Petrova, three time world champion in eurhythmics, jazz singer Yildiz Ibrahimova, actress Plamena Getova, pop-folk performer Reni and TV host Gala took part in shooting the clip.

Some 3 100 women have been diagnosed with breast cancer over the last several years, which makes it the most often met disease among Bulgarian women, accounting for 23,1% of the malignant tumours and 17,7% of the death cases in 2000.
