Iraqi Leaders Against Turkish Troops

Iraqi leaders told US officials that they do not want peacekeepers from Turkey or other neighbouring countries but are willing to soften their opposition to avoid a confrontation with the US-led coalition. They delivered their message as several thousand Shiite Muslims marched to coalition headquarters to demand the release of a cleric arrested for "anti-coalition activities." A violent confrontation with Shiites, who form about 60 percent of Iraq's 25 million people, could have serious repercussions for the U.S.-led occupation.
