US Signals on Iraq are Mixed at UN

US sent mixed signals on the future of a new Iraq resolution that has divided the UN Security Council, saying it wants a vote by an October 23 donor's conference but also raising the possibility of a delay. In Iraq insurgents killed 3 US soldiers with roadside bombs, the military reported, and former Iraqi intelligence officers demanding jobs hurled stones and charged American forces guarding occupation headquarters in the capital. Large sections of Baghdad were in turmoil. Late in the afternoon, U.S. troops fired concussion grenades and shots in the air to disperse the crowd, which grew by the hour.
