Iraq Committed to Remain OPEC Member

Iraq plans to remain a member of OPEC the Iraqi oil minister said Wednesday, dismissing any suggestion that the country would withdraw from the producers' group it helped found."Iraq should play an active role in achieving the objectives of this organization with the full coordination and cooperation of the groups' members," Iraqi oil minister Ibrahim Bahr al-Uloum told a news conference in Vienna. Iraq's role in OPEC has for months been the subject of debate, particularly among some American officials who view the group as inimical to the U.S. interest in plentiful and moderately priced crude. Although Iraq helped found OPEC in 1960, some U.S. officials have suggested that it drop out of the cartel to avoid the constraints of export quotas that would one day apply to its slowly recovering oil output.
