January-August 2001 industrial sales rose 3.6 per cent on the year-ago period, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said.

The following economy branches reported increase in sales for the period under review: the processing industry (3 per cent), the production and distribution of electricity, heating, natural gas and water (10.1 per cent); the production of radio, TV and communication equipment (56.6 per cent); the manufacture of garments and furwear (20.8 per cent); the production of chemicals (8.7 per cent).

The following economy branches reported decrease in sales for the period under review: the extraction industry (6.2 per cent); the manufacture of office and electronic equipment (41.3 per cent); printing, publishing and the production of recorded mediums (17.9 per cent); the extraction of coal and peat (14 per cent); the production and casting of metals (5.6 per cent).

Sales dropped by 0.5 per cent in August 2001 in comparison with the same month last year. Sales in the processing industry fell by 3.4 per cent for the same period and in the extraction industry by 2.9 per cent but rose by 18.9 per cent in the production and distribution of electricity, heating, natural gas and water.
Sales abroad rose by 1.7 per cent in year-on-year comparison but fell by 3.8 per cent in month-on-month comparison, NSI said. Domestic sales rose by 4.3 per cent for the period but dropped by 0.1 per cent for the month. Domestic sales in the tobacco industry slumped by 33.7 per cent in comparison with August 2000, in the production and casting of metals by 18 per cent and in the production of chemicals by 14.4 per cent, NSI said.
