Romania-Found Human Fossils "The Oldest in Europe"

World | September 23, 2003, Tuesday // 00:00

Fossils found in a bear cave in Romania are the oldest specimens yet found of modern humans in Europe, scientists said Tuesday. One of the items -- a male jawbone -- has been dated to be between 34,000 and 36,000 years old. The other pieces are still being examined but are thought to be of a similar age. Researchers argue that the discoveries show some degree of hybridisation between modern humans and Neanderthals. This suggestion is expected to bring a heated debate among scientists, many of whom doubt there was much mixing of the species.
