France Won't Veto US-Backed Resolution for Iraq

France will not veto a US-backed resolution of the United Nations (UN) Security Council on the future of Iraq, French President Jacques Chirac said. The draft text for a resolution has not yet been put to a vote. Earlier in September France criticised the US efforts to get UN support for a multinational occupation force. Instead, Paris demanded a more rapid transfer of power from the coalition forces to an Iraqi Government. So far the five permanent members of the Security Council have failed to agree on the timetable and manner of a transfer of power in Iraq, with France and the US differing most sharply.
