A car bomb exploded Monday morning while the vehicle was being examined at a checkpoint as it tried to enter the United Nations (UN) compound in Iraq, killing at least two people -- the driver and an Iraqi policeman -- and injuring nineteen others, local police reported. The blast occurs two days before US President George Bush is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly and offer an expanded role in rebuilding Iraq, a condition set by many nations for contributing peacekeepers and money to the reconstruction effort. Ongoing clashes between peacekeeping forces and Iraqi militants has raised questions about US stewardship of the country and has led to calls for an expanded role for the UN in post-was Iraq.
