Member of Iraq's Governing Council Wounded

Aquila al-Hashimi, a member of Iraq 's Governing Council, was shot and wounded Saturday outside her home in west Baghdad. Al-Hashimi is one of three women on the 25-member council and was preparing to leave for New York as part of the Iraqi delegation to the U.N. General Assembly next week in an attempt to assume Iraq's seat in the world body. She is a Shiite Muslim and a career diplomat who led the Iraqi delegation to a donors' conference in New York this summer. She holds a degree in law and a doctorate in modern literature.
