UN WORKSHOPS ON FOOD POLICIES STARTED IN SOFIA

Contemporary food policies in Southeast Europe will be discussed at the second `Workshop on Development of Food and Nutrition Action Plans` in South East Europe. The workshop started in Sofia on October 9. The two-day workshop is organized by three organizations within the United Nations system: the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF). The forum aims to encourage the implementation of national action plans related to food and nutrition in the countries of the region. Fifty representatives from Southeast and Central Europe participate in the meeting.` The formulation and application of a national concept of sustainable supply of sufficient and safe food is one of the principal tasks on the agenda of Bulgaria`s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry,` Deputy Agriculture Minister Boyko Boev said at the opening of the forum. `This can only be achieved by providing conditions for the production of varied high-quality vegetable and animal foods and through effective control over food ingredients considering the raising consumers` confidence, he added. `Bulgaria has already taken steps to adopt contemporary food and nutrition policies,` the Health Ministry announced. National legislation in the field of food quality and safety is being approximated to international standards. The Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute improves its control over food, safety and health-related practices. National Food Safety Council has been established within the Health Ministry system to coordinate the activities in this sphere.
