Russia is ready to carry out repair works on Bulgaria's nuclear units 3,4 and receive USD 150 M in return, Russia's Predident Vladimir Putin said Saturday.

The suggestion came during a meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Parvanov in Russia's Black Sea resort Sachi.

The European Union offers to build new reactors, which will cost Bulgaria some USD 2 B, Putin underlined. He added that Russia's suggestion respects the European security standards.

Bulgarian government has agreed to close the two 440-megawatt units by 2006 under pressure from the EU. However, in July Parvanov urged that the peer review on units 3,4 is conducted in October or November 2003, so that the results are known by the end of the year.

Russia plans to increase its natural gas traffic through Bulgaria, Putin also said during the meeting. The president underlined that Bulgaria and Russia should work for increasing their economic cooperation. He expressed his content with the fact that Russia-Bulgaria political relations grew more intense over the last few months.
