Najaf buried its Friday victims a day after about 85 people were killed as a car blew up outside the Tomb of Ali in the Iraqi city of Najaf during main weekly prayers. Iraq's best-known Shia politician, Ayatollah Mohammed Baqr al-Hakim, was among the dead in what is said to be an assassination. A moderate cleric, al-Hakim was seen as a stabilizing force in Iraq. He repeatedly asked the country's Shiite majority to be patient with the United States. The United Nations and the White House condemned the attack on Friday, the Islamic holy day, and the assassination of Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer al-Hakim, while analysts said it would deal a blow to efforts to rebuild the war-shattered country.
