Bulgaria's government greenlighted Thursday the entry bid of the country's Agency for Nuclear Regulation (ANR) to the Halden Reactor Project of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Bulgaria's atomic watchdog plans to join the reactor physics program on January 1, 2004.

The entry has been heralded by an agreement clinched by the ANR with the Institute for Nuclear Technologies in Norway. The paper was discussed by the government on Thursday.

The Halden project has been created as an international undertaking run by the Norway-based Agency on Nuclear Energy. It encompasses programs that form an international network for control on nuclear reactors and secures training and higher qualification courses for specialists working at nuclear power plants.

The Halden project has been wheeling for more than 40 years and joined by state bodies and research organizations from twenty countries including Belgium, Great Britain, Germany and the US.

Bulgaria currently seeks to avert the pre-schedule closure of the two older reactors at its only nuclear power plant. The European Union, which Bulgaria aspires to join, has set shutdown in 2006 as one of its conditions. The country now expects a peer review dispatched from Brussels hoping to prove that the profitable reactors are professionally maintained and pose no higher risk than their Western counterparts.
