One Danish soldier and two Iraqis serving in the international stabilisation force in Iraq were killed in a clash overnight near the southern city of Basra, British army spokesman said Sunday. The clash occurred in Al-Madinah, some 50 kilometres north of Basra, the spokesman said. Gunfire erupted as the soldier and his unit tried to examine a truck carrying several Iraqis, the Danish army command in Copenhagen said. The Dane was the first to be killed in Iraq since Denmark contributed 420 soldiers to help secure the region around Basra following the US-led war to oust former leader Saddam Hussein's regime.
