Pakistani authorities began a massive clean-up campaign to tackle the thousands of tonnes of crude oil that spilled from a wrecked tanker off the southern port city of Karachi July 28. Maritime experts say 12,000 tonnes of oil have spilled into the Arabian Sea and dead fish and turtles littered two main beaches. A key mangrove forest was also badly hit and doctors reported dozens of people suffering from nausea. However, authorities played down fears of extensive environmental damage and said the spillage had almost stopped and that the light quality of the crude meant it would evaporate quickly.
