Italy Hit by Lottery Fever

World | August 13, 2003, Wednesday // 00:00

Italy is in the grip of lottery fever ahead of Wednesday night's draw of the biggest ever jackpot in Europe. The first prize is 66 million euros ($75m). No-one has picked the six winning numbers for more than six months. From high school students through to pensioners, everyone is having a go. Even those who have never played before have been lured by a prize that would change their lives beyond recognition. Bars and newsagents around the country have been besieged. In the north, crowds have poured over the border from France, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia. Tourists in Italy have also got word of the high stakes and joined the queues. Ticket sellers say business has more than doubled in the past two weeks.
