The Bulgarians who favor Bulgaria`s accession to NATO increased by 52% since the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US, according to an opinion poll of BBSS Gallup International. The results of the survey were presented by Gallup Research Director Zhivko Georgiev at an international conference on `NATO`s New Agenda: One Year Before the Summit,` organized by The Atlantic Club of Bulgaria. `Now there is no social group in this country where proponents of NATO do not dominate,` Georgiev said. `Only the older people, whose mentality was shaped in a different age ,oppose,` he added. According to Milen Lyutskanov, Head of the NATO Division at the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry`s International Security Directorate, the US attacks prompt urgent enlargement of the North Atlantic Alliance. `Bulgaria`s admission to NATO will contribute to regional peace and to democratization of the pan-European area,` Lyutskanov also said.
