Elections in Iraq May Take Place 2004

General elections in Iraq could be held within a year to replace the US-appointed Governing Council, US administrator of Iraq Paul Bremer said. The 25-member Interim Governing Council (IGC) recently opted for a nine-member rotating presidency made up of representatives of the country's ethnic groups. The US-led force occupying Iraq would leave as soon as a new, democratic government is established, Bremer explained.
