The Bulgarian ethnic group numbered 6,661,000 people, 83.6 per cent of the Bulgarian population as at 1 March 2001; 758,000 people (9.5 per cent of the population) identified themselves as Turks and 366,000 (4.6 per cent of the total) identified themselves as Roma. These preliminary findings of the 2001 census of the population, housing stock and farms were announced by the National Statistical Institute. They are based on a 2 per cent sample of 196,000 persons.
