West African leaders are gathering in Senegal to discuss a proposed peacekeeping force for Liberia, where the latest fighting claimed 90 lives in the capital in a single day. United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has urged West African nations and the United States to take decisive action to stem the bloodshed which has engulfed Liberia since a peace process broke down earlier this month. People in the capital, Monrovia, piled corpses outside the American Embassy on Tuesday in protest at apparent US reluctance to deploy peacekeepers. The US, which has historical ties to Liberia, did however prepare to move a naval force towards the region.
