More than 17,000 acres have been scorched by a wildfire sparked by lightning that injured two fire fighters and destroyed structures at a state university research station in a sparsely populated region of eastern San Diego. The fire, which began Wednesday afternoon, was 20 percent contained, with 17,129 acres burned. Full containment was not expected until Wednesday. Two of the 1,843 fire fighters dispatched to the fire sustained minor injuries. The fire threatened 73 residences and 67 other buildings in the area. The area, about 60 miles northeast of San Diego near Riverside County, is in brush-covered hills of Chihuahua and Lost valleys on the edge of Cleveland National Forest.
