Floods in China Kill 569

The worst flood since 1991 in southeast China has killed 569 people, displaced 2.29 million people and damaged 23.62 million acres of crops so far. Anhui province was the worst hit in Eastern China and flood control authorities have been forced to open sluice gates on the rain-swollen Huaihe River to divert rising floodwater to the Qiujiahu flood diversion area. This is the eighth such area to be used this year to alleviate flooding from the Huaihe.
