Fashion: Bridal Fashion 2003

Society | July 11, 2003, Friday // 00:00

It was Queen Victoria who made the white wedding dress fashionable when she married Prince Albert in 1840. Since then, white and all shades of ivory have remained the colour of choice for most brides.

Though wearing white is likely never to go out of fashion, each year brings a new slant on what's in and what's not. Think back to Cilla Black's little red mini dress in the 60's and Bianca Jagger's stylish white trouser suit of the 70's and you'll know what we mean.

Shape of things to come:
So what's in this year? Although ivory is still very much a classic look, that will simply never date, 2003 started with a definite trend for coloured bridal gowns.

Colour and shape:
All shades of cream, gold, silver and pink have appeared, while the shape has been influenced by the beautiful off-the-shoulder Medieval and Renaissance styles, with wide slash necks.

The off the shoulder look that has been so fashionable over the last couple of years is still around but has been transformed with the addition of long, flowing sleeves.

Creamy pinks and earthy creams are everywhere this year. Gold features highly in many of the designs, with sumptuous antique gold sewn into longer than usual trains and delicate platinum and gold embroidery in Renaissance style patterns.
