Palestinian PM May Resign from Key Post

Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas offered to resign as deputy chairman of the mainstream Fatah movement. The move came amid severe splits in the group headed by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat over the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Abbas was accused of making too many concessions to Israel which promised to release just a few hundred of the more than 6,000 Palestinian prisoners. He cancelled Tuesday a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Ariel Sharon over the issue and the talks were due to take place on Wednesday.
