One of the world's largest Pride celebrations drew 800,000 people onto Sao Paulo's streets to get a glimpse of the parade. According to police reports there were more than twice the number of spectators and revellers than last year. The parade is considered to be the third biggest gay parade in the world after that in San Francisco and Toronto. Sao Paulo has Latin America's largest gay community and has a world renowned gay nightlife, with about 85 bars, restaurants and clubs. The theme of this year's parade was "constructing homosexual policies" to speed up pro-gay legislation, including a proposed gay partnership law that has been stuck in Brazil's Congress for seven years. A vociferous lobby of Protestants and Roman Catholics so far has blocked the proposal from being voted on.
