Over BGN 50,000 was raised at the charity football match in which Bulgarian politicians faced foreign diplomats. The organizers will donate the sum to the social institutions for disabled in Bulgaria.

No team managed to take the upper hand in the football battle that ended 4:4. Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov had the first kick in the match. Foreign Minister Passy and Euro-integration Minister Meglena Kuneva also took part in the sports event that was mottoed "Bulgaria in the European Union - January 1, 2007."

The first goal was scored in the 10th minute of the match by the chief of the ruling party's parliamentary group Plamen Panayotov assisted by President Parvanov. "I was beginning to worry about our diplomatic relations," the president quipped. He then added that such events strengthen Bulgaria's international ties.

In the recess, a special ceremony was held to honour the Bulgarian team that will take part in the Olympic Games for Disabled in Dublin end-June.

The matches between high-ranking officials in Bulgaria were first initiated by Swedish Ambassador Sten Ask who was one of the most active players in the diplomatic team. President Parvanov suggested that the match should turn into charity event.

We want to show all Bulgarians and Europe that Bulgarian politicians enjoy broad consensus on EU entry, said Maxim Behar, CEO of M3 Communications Group Inc, co-organiser of the event. Similar matches are to be held every six months prior to the country's accession.
