Bulgaria's best graffitists had the opportunity to transcend their art's underground status. They freely expressed themselves and modernised the country's capital Sofia at the first graffiti festival on Saturday.

The graffiti maniacs covered the metal plates that surround the crumbling monument nearby the National Palace of Culture NDK with sprayed masterpieces.

Every participant worked on a spot of 15 sq m and re-designed refrigerators that will become part of the interior of popular Sofia cafйs.

The graffitists have been selected at a preliminary competition that gathered street artists from across Bulgaria.

An 11-member jury spanning contemporary art experts and journalists assessed the participants.

To get the atmosphere right, Bulgaria's best hip-hop bands performed while the painters poured color on to the NDK Square.
