Special forces in Serbia have arrested one of the country's most wanted war crimes suspects. Veselin Sljivancanin, a former colonel in the Yugoslav national army, was picked up by police after a 10-hour standoff outside his house in Belgrade. Several hundred supporters of the war crimes suspect attacked police who had to fire on the crowd to try to quell the disturbances. Civil disturbance like this has not been seen for many years on the streets of central Belgrade. Riot police were called in to disperse the crowd as vehicles were smashed, fires lit. The police used teargas and stun grenades. Tension had been building all day in a small area of the city, close to the former colonel's home.
